Game Fish Stocking

Fish Population Surveys

Stocking more fish is not always the answer to improving an existing fishery. ATAC has developed a cost-effective approach to analyzing the quality of your established fishery. We use state-of-the-art sampling technology which is the same as that used by all state fish and wildlife agencies. The main sampling technique is called Electro-shocking or Electro-fishing. This technology uses a pulsating DC electric current to stun fish for easy capture without harm. Fish are then counted, weighed and aged. To avoid any sampling bias due to using a single sampling technique, we perform alternate sampling methods such as trap nets and seines which insures an accurate assessment of your fishery.

For Example: Electro-fishing is not as efficient for sampling young-of-the-year fingerlings as it is for adults; therefore, to improve the accuracy we will also sample with seines. This technique captures the young-of-the-year fingerlings which helps determine accurate survival rates from the previous years of spawning. We can also determine which species are present and at what ratios. Why is this information important? Because if the bass are reproducing successfully, you may not need to stock more, but possibly provide more food. Or it may be necessary to reduce the amount of aquatic weeds to allow easier access of the bass to existing prey. These are the types of questions that are answered with an accurate assessment of your existing fishery. Knowing the problem is the first step to solving the problem, and can save you money in the long run. ATAC has the expertise to help you reach your goals; call us for a free estimate.
