THE SET UP

Pond Cross Section

  1. Fill your water garden container with water, it will need to be dechlorinated if you have city water. Remember that any water added in the future will also need to be dechlorinated.

  2. Plant and set your plants in your pond, including submerged plants. See “Aquatic Plants” for stocking densities and species. Use rocks, if necessary, to adjust levels of plants to proper water depth. See sketch for proper water depth over pot, each plant type is different.

  3. Fountains AvailableWait two weeks after placing plants before adding fish or scavengers. This will allow your pond to go through a cycle in which your water will turn green, DO NOT DRAIN WATER. This is normal and will only be repeated with new water. This process is part of achieving balance in your water quality.

  4. It is time to add fish. It is best to add just a few at first and wait about 7 days to add remaining fish. See “Ornamental Fish” for stocking densities and information. This waiting period allows for nitrifying bacteria (for removing ammonia) to grow and for ammonia levels to become balanced. This will help prevent fish mortality due to high ammonia.

  5. Recirculate and filter the total volume of pond every 4 to 6 hours using a fountain, submerged pump or waterfall.

  6. Sit back and enjoy your creation!
